Character's name: Matthew 'Punchy' O'Connor
Character's LJ:
masterofnun
Character's canon: The Intimates
Brief personality outline of your character:
Punchy is a young, ambitious, awkward teenager. Since he was young, he's idolized superheroes, hip hop MCs, vigilantes and action heroes, and was profoundly dissatisfied with pretty much every aspect of his 'boring' white, middle-class, rural life. As a teenager, he is desperately obsessed with the idea of becoming a true superhero. He has secretly wished for horrible things to happen to people close to him to give him a 'tragic past' that would explain his love for heroics. Punchy often sees the world as being like a comic book or action movie, and makes plans according to common tropes, and when speaking about himself to others often lies to make his life seem more interesting.
Punchy is often crude, spiteful, and naturally very rebellious. He is distrustful of authority and and believes in anarchy, although he's not entirely sure what that is. He is sexist and fatphobic, though not much more so than the average teenage boy. Despite his proclaimed high sex drive, Punchy is often very awkward around women his age. He tends to assume all his peers admire him unless proven otherwise, but takes criticism very personally due to his insecurities. He believes himself to be a natural leader but is very bad at co-ordinating groups of people, and often ends up as an unwitting sidekick.
Despite his obliviousness to social cues, Punchy is very intelligent, having taught himself to read at a young age and having self-trained as a hacker and cyber vigilante. He is not, however, book-smart, since his anti-authoritarian streak also extends to teachers.
Punchy is, at his core, a good person who reaches out to outcasts and underdogs. He has a tendency to befriend people no one else wants to, and to pick up on other people's serious emotional issues. He is humane towards captives of his and Flora's superheroics and believes in superheroes devoutly following their own personal moral code.
Punchy often carries out entire one-sided conversations with his magical puppet.
Brief history and background of your character:
Born to an unexceptional family in rural Missouri, Matthew O'Connor spent most of his childhood playing outside seeking adventure. When he was eight, while playing in the backyard he discovered a box with a magical puppet inside. When his sister was later murdered by an escaped convict, he began to dress the puppet up as a nun in her honor.
As a teenager, he was shunned in his public school for his strange dialect (absorbed from hip hop music and gangster movies) and his 'geeky' interests in superheroes, comic books and the internet. He and his best friend Flora both applied to The Seminary, a school for superheroes in training, though only he was accepted. Despite his powers and enthusiasm, he had enough discipline problems that he was held back a year, with the potential to be expelled.
During his repeat sophomore year, Punchy befriended The Duke, a shy student fast-tracked for greatness, and became acquainted with classmates Destra, Empty Vee, Sykes and Kefong. He began to suspect something was wrong with the food given to them at the Seminary, and attempted to bribe the janitors and the upperclassmen into giving him information.
He also became aware that a new student, Dead Kid Fred, was feeling outcast and attempted to reach out to him - when his attempts at friendship were rebuffed, a concerned Punchy began to follow Dead Kid Fred's blog, and realizes that Dead Kid Fred was suicidal. He broke down Dead Kid Fred's door in time to intervene with Dead Kid Fred's suicide attempt.
He, The Duke, Empty Vee and Destra all plotted to shut off Sykes' sensory-barring helmet during the school year, but when they did they threw the school into a psychodrama that preyed on their deepest fears and insecurities. In Punchy's hallucination, he was a small child being sexually assaulted by an older man, and he admitted to wishing Dead Kid Fred had died so that that Punchy could have had a dramatic moment that spurred him to superherodom. He also admitted that he was glad his sister had died, but that it 'wasn't enough for a good story'. Kefong eventually put a stop to the psychodrama by resetting Sykes' helmet.
Over the summer, Punchy and Flora reconnected and lost their virginity to each other; however, they were caught in the act by two of the bullies from their school. In a fit of rage, Flora terrorized and threatened to torture and kill them, but Punchy persuaded her to let them go. He and Destra later teamed up to find out more about the Seminary food, but failed to find any meaningful information from Destra's sources. While infiltrating the school, they were attacked by a mind-controlled upperclassman, who died in the ensuing fight. Destra and Punchy determined that the Seminary was no longer a safe haven for superpowered teenagers.
Upon their return to school, the Seminary administration discovered the breach in security, and went to trap the students involved. Destra was abducted. In a race against time Punchy, Kefong, The Duke and Empty Vee rescued Destra and broke into a lab Punchy knew about from earlier networking. To escape from the school administration, the kids used the computers to open up a mysterious portal that possibly led to escape and possibly would have just killed them. They jumped into it and their fates are now unknown.
It is slightly suggested in the text that they all died during the psychodrama in #6, however, and everything past that point was a hallucination in Punchy's final moments.
Punchy is taken from right after he jumps into the portal.
Sample post:
Basketball. Out of an entire Sensorium-full of limitless possibilities, Punchy's craving basketball.
Not that it's easy to play B-Ball in his superhero outfit, with the clunky jacket, gloves, combat boots, giant belt buckle, million straps and pockets, and worst of all, the cowl. He seriously should have reconsidered the cowl. Nothing quite collects more sweat in more awkward places than tight vinyl pasted to your face.
Still, he plays hard. All his moves are one-handed - he never puts Puppet down, ever - but he's fast and his throws are accurate. Of course, that's probably because he's playing right beneath the net, running in tight circles around imaginary opponents.
He makes another shot and sighs as the ball swishes through the net.
"Yeah, I understand," he says to Puppet as he slumps onto a bleacher, letting the ball roll away across the floor. "Ain't no fun without some mad homies to trounce."
If the character has magic, mutant, or otherwise metahuman abilities, please explain what they are:
Punchy carries a magical handpuppet that, when worn, gives him increased punching strength. The puppet creates a localized force field during punching to protect his hand and itself from damage. Punchy has never successfully used his puppet on another living being, but he is shown to be capable of breaking through concrete and metal and slicing through entire trees.
Non-superhuman special abilities of note:
Punchy is an extremely skilled hacker, having spent most of his youth organizing untraceable anarchist forums, breaking into the FBI online, and tracking down internet predators.
